Sisters at Shannon's house--I can't remember what they were laughing about, but it seemed like they were always laughing about something  that week.
Class of 2004, the year is almost over. And what have you done? Have you done anything worth speaking of?  Anything even worth talking about? Why not?  Our class flower is the White Rose with Purple Tips.  Not bad, but not very unique.  Wouldn't something else be better, like a golden rose with purple tips, or some other flower than a rose?  I know we have to stay with the school colors, but come on, isn't that choice a little boring? It's just like our colors, "Purple and Silver."  I think we could have done a little better than that.  Maybe "Blue and Silver" or something wild, like "Blue and Orange." I think that might be better, it would show other classes and other generations that THEY were different. Now, I know that those colors and such were chosen in accordance with our school colors, but really, I think it would have been ok to spice things up a bit.

And finally, the song, "(Good Riddance) Time of Your Life by Green Day." Now, I'm not denying that it's a good song, but it just seems like it was the right thing to do, to make the song be ours, for this time, of graduation. Its like the songs that are sappy, and sad, and make everyone think. I think we could have done better in our choosing. It just seems too mundane, too normal, too unexciting, too dreary, too boring for our class.

I've had a great time here at Senior High, and it's sad to see something just get thrown into the routine of what should be, or how people think things should be. We need to reach our goals, and were not going to do that by just being mundane. We need to make new goals for ourselves. We need to, because without them, we have nothing to achieve. We need to set goals for ourselves, we need to have plans for ourselves, and we need to reach them. I've seen the people at this school, and I know that we can do it; we just can't be mundane about it at all. We need to think outside of the box, we can't follow what others have done, that wouldn't help us at all.

If we did just follow what others have done, to just take their path, follow their lead, and go with it. What would we accomplish? NOTHING!  We would just be doing the same things that they did, but it would be comfortable, because we would know that it's been done before and that it'll work out. It would be easy, and it would be predictable, and mundane. I'm not going to settle for that. I know that I'm going somewhere big if I have the determination and the will to make it. And that doesn't mean that you can't either. Everyone of you has the ability and the will to make it in this life. I know this. And don't make excuses, because excuses are just lazy, cop-out reasons of why you don't do something. I'm not going to listen to them, and probably no one else will either. So do something, don't just get a job flipping burgers for the rest of your life. Do something bigger, I can't tell you what you should do, and you'll have to find that out for yourselves.

Your high school career has ended, and it's been fun, it's been fast, and they told us it would be over before we knew it; I didn't believe them, but they were right. And they were right about making the most of it. Because now we are going on to real life. And it's scary.

What are you going to do, have you even thought about it yet? Some of you are going to college, or some other kind of schooling, but what about you that don't know what you're doing yet? Isn't it scary?

People are always saying that Grand Island is great, and that Grand Island has the best students. Well, let's prove them right, let's be the best we can be. I know that I will!

WE WILL NOT BE MUNDANE!
      John's Graduation Speech
Three of John's favorite Elementary teachers came to watch him graduate.        L-R:Christy Hewitt, Yvette Engelhaupt, and Lola Harnisch.  Mrs. Harnisch died unexpectedly of a brain aneurism while John was in Phoenix.

John waited until everyone else had thrown their cap before tossing his into the air--making his own unique statement!
